Flash Fiction Contest: Tall Talk, Secret Stories

UPDATE: Our 2012 flash fiction contest is now closed. Winners will be announced by October 9. Thank you to all who participated!

“Everything necessary to understand my grandfather lies between two stories: the story of the tiger’s wife, and the story of the deathless man. These stories run like secret rivers through all the other stories of his life…” Tea Obreht, “The Tiger’s Wife”

“Shere Khan is all long tail and tall talk.” Rudyard Kipling, “The Jungle Book”

These quotes inspire this year’s One Read writing contest. “The Tiger’s Wife” is rich in themes of personal myth-making, superstition and family secrets. Your challenge, therefore, in 250 words or less, is to craft a tale in which a secret is revealed or concealed. Your secret can be small and personal or significant. Its telling (or its concealment) can have happy or devastating consequences. The details are up to you! Entries may be submitted using this form or at any library or bookmobile. Winning entries and honorable mentions will be published on this site and winners will get a $20 book store gift card. Entries are due by September 24.

Participants must be age 16 or older and residents of Boone or Callaway Counties. Read on for complete contest rules.
