One Read 2009: “The Air We Breathe” by Andrea Barrett

In the fall of 1916, America prepares for war, but time moves slowly for the tuberculosis patients, scientists and caregivers at Tamarack Lake sanitarium, an isolated community in the Adirondacks. A discussion group started by a well-meaning patient provides a weekly diversion, but also sets the stage for dramatic events that bring the war home. Andrea Barrett is a National Book Award winner for “Ship Fever” and a Pulitzer Prize finalist for “Servants of the Map.”
