I was disappointed with this year’s selection. I think the One Read selection should be based on its entertainment value to all ages and groups. This encourages more reading in our community by putting forth books that are captivating and remind the infrequent reader how much fun it is to escape into a good book. I agree that this book was well written, the characters were extremely well developed, and that the dialog flowed effortlessly. But, while reading this book I felt this one was selected because of its educational value and the timeliness of its moral lesson. By contrast, the 2007 selection, “Water For Elephants” was pure entertainment for any and every age and demographic group. The plot was absolutely absorbing, causing me to steal time throughout the day to read “just a few more pages”. With “The Air We Breath”, I had to push myself to finish. I found the plot to be predictable, and the conclusion unsatisfying.

I loved the book. My mother was born in NY in 1911 and we had a family member who was in a TB sanitorium somewhere in NY, so that made a special connection for me. I am very interested in the concept of the reading circles of that time and hope to learn more about them during the upcoming One Read discussions!

I have completed the book, and found it very interesting and quite an education. I plan to read more of Barrett’s books, and look forward to the activities in September!

I enjoyed reading this book and one part (a small part) reminded me of the old-fashioned toy, the erector set. And I went online to purchase a collector’s item for my grandson. What great fun and a fond memory of things past.
