The highlight of the One Read program is a visit from the award-winning author of "The Tortilla Curtain," T. C. Boyle. Of his presentation, Boyle says, “I will read a short story and do a Q & A, which I love to do, and they can come with their questions, and we will do our best.”

The reception and book signing are free and open to the public. For the reading, a limited number of tickets will be given away at library One Read programs, and, beginning September 18, some will be available at the Columbia Public Library Information Desk. Tickets may also be purchased for $5 each at the Brady Commons box office on the MU campus and, on September 20, at the Jesse Auditorium box office. Tickets are free with a valid MU student ID.

Express Yourself Art Show: The American Dream, Call for Entries

Inspired by this year's One Read book, the theme for this year's show is the immigrant experience. Entries may be in any two- or three-dimensional media. This juried show is open to anyone of any age in the Mid-Missouri community. Submit your work by Monday, September 18 to your library or bookmobile.

Guidelines and entry forms are available at your library, on the bookmobile or online. The show will be displayed in Columbia, in Fulton and on the library's Web site.

Columbia Art Show

Evening of Friday, September 22
Hosted by: Cherry Street Artisan, 111 S. 9th St.

Come see artwork produced by local talent and inspired by our One Read book, "The Tortilla Curtain." Purchase a drink or snack from the Cherry Street Artisan this evening while viewing work based on this year's theme, the immigrant experience. Stop by at 9 p.m. to enjoy the music of Javier Mendoza (below).

Javier Mendoza Concert, 9 p.m.

The evening of the Express Yourself One Read Art Show (above), you can enjoy the music of Javier Mendoza while you check out the work of local artists. Singing in English and Spanish, Mendoza blends his Spanish roots with classic and modern rock influences to produce a unique sound. A strong solo performer, Mendoza has played at colleges and clubs throughout the U.S. and recently won the audience award for best latin artist in Saint Louis' 2006 Music Awards sponsored by community radio station KDHX. There is a $3 cover charge.

Fulton Art Show

Monday, September 25-Monday, October 2
Hosted by: Westwood Coffee, 319 W. 4th, Fulton

Artwork produced by local talent and inspired by our One Read book, "The Tortilla Curtain," will be on display from September 25 through October 2 at Westwood Coffee in Fulton. Enjoy a delicious latté or try some of the finest sandwiches in the area while viewing artwork based on this year's theme, the immigrant experience.
